Like many Canadians, I am looking for ways to avoid American businesses when I am shopping. I even wear a button that says "Buy Canadian Instead." You can see us at the grocery stored turning over the product to read the fine print before putting it in the shopping cart. What to do about products that say, "Produced in Canada from imported ingredients"? Imported from where?
I face the same dilemma when it comes to self-publishing my books. At the moment, some of my books are published on the platform Draft2Digital where they can be purchased as e-books or print-on-demand. For many reasons I am not very happy with the company, and not just because it is American. For one thing, they hold money I've earned until it reaches a threshold, something that is unnecessary. And then, when it reaches that threshold, which rarely does, they will pay me through "PayPal", another American company.
The last time I ordered some author copies of Maid of Gold from Draft2Digital, I was very disappointed in the product: the cover's colours were faded and the paper was coarse and cheap. What's more, it was printed in Tennessee! It didn't cost me much, (you get what you pay for) so I'm going to sell the copies cheap so I can get ride of them. I won't buy any more copies from Draft2Digital, and I would urge you not to either.
So, the search began for a Print on Demand in Canada. So far, I have found nothing. But when you start looking for something online, Facebook usually comes up with a suggestion. That's how I discovered Books.by. This is an Australian company that does business around the world. So I decided to try them out. I placed Maid of Gold on the site books.by/edeana and got my husband to purchase a copy. I wanted to see where it was printed and what the quality was like. I was pleased with the result. The cover and paper-grade were better and, even better, the book came from Toronto. Yes!
If you don't live in Victoria, and you'd like a copy of Maid of Gold, please purchase a copy from books.by/edeana. The shipping cost is $5.00 worldwide and the money I'm owed goes directly into my bank account. I'll be setting up more of my books on this site in the future.
